At a glance
In October 2008, the Miyakonojo City Council consolidated fifteen servers onto two NEC Express5800/SIGMABLADE blade servers by using VMware Infrastructure 3 virtualization software and NEC SigmaSystemCenter system management software. The project was a great step forward for the city that aims to build a “Flexible and efficient platform to provide better government services.” The council now plans to proceed with similar consolidation of all its servers which number well over 100.
Background and issues
- The servers, managed by the Information Policy Division, filled an entire server room, and were difficult to maintain due to limited personnel, budget, and space.
- The Miyakonojo City Council wanted to create an efficient and flexible information system infrastructure, reduce operating and management costs, and raise overall security levels. The City Council also wanted to consolidate duplicate business systems resulting from the recent merger of five municipalities as well as eliminate procurement and ongoing maintenance costs.
Results
- The 12 applications on the 15 servers were safely transferred to virtual servers running on only two physical servers, where operations proved stable.
- Additional server applications can be deployed quickly without having to purchase a new server or incur maintenance costs, as long as there are sufficient resources on the physical servers.
- Operating costs were lowered and mistakes reduced by standardizing the operations management.
NEC proposal
- NEC proposed a solution that consisted of NEC Express5800/SIGMABLADE servers, VMware Infrastructure 3 virtualization software, and SigmaSystemCenter system management software.
- In addition to evaluating an extremely large number of applications for testing purposes, NEC ran all applications in a test environment to ensure stable operation before transferring the applications to the actual virtual environment.
