Background

Adopting SAP ERP in China for global operations management

Sysmex Corporation provides a full range of diagnostic products including clinical testing equipment, diagnostic reagents, and diagnostic information systems, along with support services for these products to over 150 countries worldwide. It continues its growth as the only Asian company among the top ten leading players in the global diagnostics market. In China it has established five locations including sales offices in Shanghai and Hong Kong, a software development firm, and reagent factories in Wuxi and Jinan. Through these offices Sysmex is actively working to open new markets.

The company’s operations in China and other global locations have grown dramatically in the past few years, to the point that nearly 70% of its sales are now overseas. Therefore, it faced a pressing need to provide global operational management for its entire group.

“For that purpose, we had to standardize core business processes, including accounting, production and SCM, on the overall group level,” says Mr. Masahiro Fujino of the Corporate Planning Department at Sysmex Shanghai Ltd. “That is why we decided to deploy SAP ERP, which we had already been using at our headquarter in Japan, in our overseas offices in Asia, Europe and the United States. It was under this policy that we decided to adopt SAP in China as well.”

Intallation Process

The deciding factor was NEC’s comprehensive solution, from SAP system proposals to building and operation

Three partners were considered by Sysmex Shanghai Ltd. for their adoption of SAP in China. From these candidates, Sysmex chose NEC. Mr. Fujino explains the reasons behind the choice.

“NEC gave us a huge advantage for our SAP adoption project in China because it offered us a total integrated solutions package. In cooperation with NEC IT Management (Shanghai) Ltd.*1 and NEC Solutions (China) Co., Ltd.*2, NEC provided SAP system proposals and construction, system platform building, and even maintenance. I also felt secure with NEC because they use their own servers and offer support with direct response from the Japanese developers in the event of failure. In addition, they offer a system with Japanese language support, which is also very attractive to us.”

System Overview

N+1 Recovery Function and Highly-Reliable Storage Provide Superb Business Continuity and Data Integrity

The SAP adoption project was launched in April 2008. A particular point of emphasis in building the system was the platform. Being a system for managing global operations, it absolutely had to offer high fault-resistance and quick recovery in the event of failure, as well as high-level business continuity. In addition, because of the rapid pace of Sysmex Corporation’s growth in China, the system had to provide scalability suitable for future growth. Also, it was decided that the server adopted for this project would be stored in an external data center within China, so a blade server was employed to control long-term running cost by keeping installation space small.

With these points in mind, NEC proposed using the SAP on Blade system platform for SAP. This platform had already been run in China and received high marks. This is a recommended blade model configuration for which operation with SAP had already been verified in Japan. “It was good to know that the design documents were prepared in advance and it could be quickly built as a system platform just by punching in the parameters,” says Mr.Ling Yun, head of IT Network Management at the Sysmex Shanghai Ltd. Corporate Planning Division.

The SAP system platform built for this project uses the NEC Express 5800/SIGMA BLADE server and NEC SigmaSystemCenter integrated platform management software. Four servers plus one backup server were allocated under the N+1 Recovery system, which satisfied the requirement for high-level business continuity by allowing automatic switching to the backup server. It also enabled environment expansion through simple policy setting additions from NEC SigmaSystemCenter when adding another blade server, ensuring high-level scalability.

In addition, NEC Storage was utilized for reliability. Data integrity was improved by creating a backup within the storage unit itself using DDR (Dynamic Data Replication) and creating an additional backup on tape.

Backups were also automated using MasterScope JobCenter job management software. This reduced the workload for management and total cost of ownership(TCO).

“By taking a recommended configuration that had already been verified in Japan and deploying it in China, our SAP introduction went very quickly and smoothly,” says Mr. Fujino.

Results and Future Prospects

Utilizing scalability and looking ahead to links with external systems

The first stage in the system constructed for this project will the launch of a system for Shanghai and Hong Kong sales offices in March 2009. Launch in the second stage in the Wuxi and Jinan factories is planned for sometime by September 2009.

Regarding its effects after adoption, Mr.Ling Yun emphasizes, “With NEC SigmaSystemCenter, being able to monitor the condition of each blade server on a single screen in real time makes the system easy to manage. Also, with automated backup management, it is extremely easy to handle system operations, including failures.” Mr. Fujino adds, “In the future, I would like to link it to various external systems such as workflow, sales management and China’s unique payroll tax system.”

As Sysmex Corporation continues to expand its China operations, its newly-adopted SAP ERPsystem platform will surely continue to support its growth well into the future.
