Energy:Accelerate the utilization of green energy.

Develop a new energy infrastructure based on ICT and realize efficient operations by visualizing power consumption.

Global energy sources are about to change drastically. To prevent global warming, mitigate price fluctuation risks, and overcome resource shortages, green energy such as solar power and wind power will become mainstream. Power generation capabilities are expected to move beyond existing power companies, extending to corporations, local communities, and homes. Corporations and households who were energy consumers before will become electricity suppliers, providing electricity generated by solar power or other sustainable means. A new era is beginning.

For green energy to succeed, an electricity utilization infrastructure must be developed in which demand and supply are well balanced. One of the key technologies that can be used to realize a low-carbon society is smart grids (next-generation electricity networks). Smart grids are a sophisticated combination of ICT and electricity networks that optimize electricity utilization by exchanging real-time information on both the demand and supply of electricity among power companies, corporations and homes. The United States has already launched a series of projects using smart grids as part of the Obama administration's Green New Deal policy.

Key actions for more ecologically sound energy:

  • Implement total energy control by integrating ICT and electricity networks.
  • Establish two-way real-time information linkage for demand and supply.
  • Reduce environmental impact by creating a stable supply of green energy.
  • Compile a database for energy consumption by using ICT such as automated meter reading.

Promoting efficient energy utilization

NEC provides technologies, systems, and products that help generate green energy and enable energy savings society. NEC's technologies enable energy system visualization and control, effective utilization of nighttime electricity, and distributed energy utilization. Examples include shifting energy used by IT devices or at data centers to green energy, charging excessive green energy to large-capacity storage batteries, and selling excessive energy to power companies or bringing excessive energy to the electricity trading market. NEC helps create mechanisms to realize all of these.
