London – one of the most exciting cities in the world.

With The O2, which opened in 2007, AEG wanted to create an entertainment venue for the 21st century that could house a variety of attractions under one roof.

The challenge was to create a state of the art entertainment complex, such as the Staples Centre in Los Angeles.

One of the challenges was fitting out and connecting the 20,000 seater multi-purpose arena and the entertainment area along with the provision of a network infrastructure, telephone system and cinema complex.

Only NEC could supply the variety of technologies needed for such an ambitious project. With its many divisions NEC can demonstrate its power as a multi-solution provider.

From IP telephony to network solutions, servers to venue management, various kinds of cutting edge technologies bring benefits to The O2.

The latest technology for the 11-screen cinema complex – this was to be the first custom built digital multiplex in Europe hosting major film premiers and with NEC's digital projectors, the cinemas could be used for other activities – sport and music events and educational demonstrations could be viewed at The O2 in real time transmitting from all over the world.

With smart cards, AEG could learn more about it's customers and staff, and deliver the best possible services and offering potential for cashless payments.
A loyalty scheme powered by RFID technology, computers, servers and laptops could also be provided as part of the solution.

Lesly Saville Chief Marketing Officer AEG;
"One of the great things we'e found working with NEC is that they don't just take the brief if you like and then go off and execute. They add real value along the way as part of the process. And one of the projects we've been working on is, we wanted to introduce a loyalty scheme using RFID technology and NEC actually helped us scope what the defined project should be as part of the overall process and from an AEG perspective that was real added value because one and one made three."

Additionally the NEC Experience, a demonstration facility has been added to help raise brand awareness of the technology solutions NEC has provided at The O2.

The technology that NEC has been able to provide to The O2 demonstrates the breadth and depth of NECs technologies. The O2 has become the world's most popular venue and entertainment complex, a true testament to the partnership between AEG and NEC.

The project has established a potentially long-term fruitful relationship between the two companies.

David Payette President and CEO NEC UK;
"The O2 is one of the most exciting, largest and diverse entertainment venues – certainly in Europe, if not the world. AEG like to call it 'a world of entertainment under one roof' and none of that could be sustained or optimized or made as effective as it is without the technological innovation, project management, systems integration that NEC brings to bear in the support of the project. And to be a part of that is a really exciting thing."

London has been the big city full of landmarks famous for their contribution to culture, business and entertainment. Recently, one iconic structure has joined. That is The O2, which opened in 2007.

The company created The O2 is AEG, headquartered in the US and well known for delivering many exciting venues, such as Staples centre in Los Angeles. Even for AEG, The O2 was one of their most ambitious projects. It has music clubs, cinema complex with cutting-edge digital projectors, major exhibitions, over 20 bars and restaurants. There is also a large indoor arena accommodates 23,000 audiences. AEG's vision for The O2 is the world of entertainment under one roof.

To realize the vision AEG definitely needed the partner that could provide the most advanced technology in the world. After a thorough research on products and the ability to deliver complete technology solutions, AEG chose NEC,

As Michelle of AEG puts it, "We needed a partner such as NEC, that could offer a comprehensive solution package."

A good example is an 11 screen cinema complex, Europe's first custom built digital multiplex. Three of the cinemas feature NEC's NC2500S digital projector, one of the most advanced projectors in the world. Its potential is not limited within cinemas. NEC's projectors can connect to any high definition source, which means that sports or music events could be viewed at The O2 all in real time.

NEC also has delivered smart card technology. From the standpoint of users, smart cards could be access cards or loyalty cards, however, they could be the encapsulation from the management side.

Just as The O2 has been designed to be a showcase for the world's best entertainment, NEC has transformed an ordinary room into a showcase for their extensive range of technology solutions.

"The NEC demonstration suite is the one place that we can encapsulate the One NEC story. It shows our prospects and clients the breadth and depth of all of our divisions' capabilities", says Richard of NEC.

To sum up, AEG wanted The O2 equipped with IP telephony, network solution, computers and servers for venue management and only NEC could provide them such various kinds of solutions solely.

This is a triumph of partnership between two world leaders, AEG and NEC. It isn't too much to say that without this collaboration, The O2, one of the greatest entertainment complexes in the world, would not exist.
